Career Plans Back to Introduction

I wish to pursue a career as a Database Administrator (DBA) and eventually work my way up to a Computer and Information Systems Manager position. I understand that most DBAs begin working in a related field to gain experience before becoming a DBA, so I will be open to any related position after I graduate that will put me on the path to becoming a DBA. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the major tasks of a DBA are to determine user needs for the creation and administration of databases, to maintain and ensure optimal performance of databases, integrate old databases into new systems, and to secure the organization’s data (n.d.).

At a high level, my plans for the next 1.5 years are to finish my bachelor’s degree, build and maintain a good network of colleagues, perform independent studies and gain experience through volunteer projects. I’m currently working on a Charitable Donations Database for the Harlan County Public Library (HCPL) system in Harlan County, KY as a volunteer project. This system will allow library personnel to track charitable donations which are currently recorded on paper, and also automate the preparation of certificates of contribution.

I understand that there are several certifications that are preferred for the position of Database Administrator. I have 2 years of work experience with SQL and VBA. I would like to further my knowledge of SQL and obtain my Microsoft SQL Server certification before I graduate. I would also like to learn at least one programming language and scripting language. Currently, I am independently studying C++ and I’d like to learn Python as well, which I’ve heard is actually a full-fledged programming language that is really easy to script with.

I realize that life sometimes throws us curveballs so I will remain open to change and embrace unexpected opportunities. I believe that any IT career is one that requires continuous learning because technology changes so quickly. Most of the decisions that I have made so far are based on suggestions from mentors in IT fields, suggestions from more knowledgeable peers in similar degree programs, and some light research. I’m looking forward to researching my career path in depth and solidifying my decisions.
